I’m an old timer when it comes to school. I have had a child in some form of school since 1998. 1998! My oldest started preschool in the winter of 1998. She was barely 2. I hated the thought of sending her, but I had to be realistic. My workload as a Work-at-Home editorial manager was on overload. I was not getting my work done during her once-a-day nap. I was scrambling to do my work at night and on the weekends. My husband stepped in as Mr. Mom when he was home, but he was a full-time teacher, a part-time volleyball coach, and a part-time graduate student. Those early days were nutty. I barely had time to do more than say a quick hello and goodbye to the teachers and administrators at drop off and pick up. I probably wrote a check for a pizza kit or something. But nothing more.

Fast forward to 2001…it was a different story, My husband was still teaching full time, but no longer coached volleyball. He was newly graduated with a PhD in English Education. But what about me?

I made a life-changing decision. I looked at our family’s struggles — we were being pulled in so many directions. All answers led to — stress. And lots of it. My husband had a stressful job with many people dependent on him. I was a stay-at-home mom of a toddler and a preschooler AND a work-at-home mom. I was at my breaking point with work, kids, marriage, and everything else you can think of. The decision I made was the hardest and best decision I have ever made as an adult. I decided to quit my work-at-home job and become a full-time stay-at-home mom. Best. Decision. I. Ever. Made.

By putting the breaks on my not-going-anywhere, but ever-so-stressful work-at-home position, I was able to devote time to my family. Much needed time. Beyond family, I discovered a new found love…the love of volunteering at church and school. With all my extra free time, I threw myself headlong in to the volunteering business.

I volunteered in the church nursery during Mass. I became the class historian for my daughter’s preschool class. I even created a yearbook for the class! I relished volunteering in my daughter’s kindergarten classroom. With a full room of squirmy kindergarteners, the teacher needed an extra person to go over sightword lists or do craft projects with small groups. While I was never a room mom, I volunteered my time to class parties and sent in snacks and juice bags.

As a volunteer I was very willing to sign up for this activity or volunteer to chaperone that field trip. I wish I had known about VolunteerSpot back in the early 2000s…my life and the lives of my fellow PTA members would have been so much easier. VolunteerSpot is THE place to have your school’s volunteers sign up to volunteer now that everyone is back to school.
