My favorite were the Romona books by Beverly Cleary. I loved the Henry Huggins books she wrote, too, especially Ribsy. My daughter has just started reading them.

P.S. – I moved to Old Town Alexandria, VA from NYC, and I can totally see why driving to DC was intimidating for you! Driving around here is way more stressful than anything I ever encountered in NYC.
