Review & Giveaway: The Works of Joy Berry

December 22, 2009
By

Have you ever met someone so joyful you just want to smile? I had the pleasure of meeting one such person at the ChildsPlayPR #bloggersbrunch in New York City.

Joy Berry is possibly one of the most positive people I have ever met. I had an instant connection with her as soon as I started talking with her. Fun!

Joy Berry is an accomplished author who has sold over 80 million copies of her books. She has written over 240 Living Skills books for kids. She is an educator, parenting expert, and child development specialist who began writing self-help books over 30 years ago when she couldn’t find books that matched her philosophy for raising responsible children.

You Can...Get Over ItAs I waited for my train back to Maryland from the #bloggersbrunch, I started to dip in to one of Joy’s books for older children. The book — Winning Skills: You…Can Get Over It! – is a cartoon illustrated self-help book for overcoming fear, handling stress, handling criticism and rejection, handling rude people, handling tough situations, and getting rid of bad habits. I found this book to be helpful to my life as a harried, on-the-go, work-at-homer mom/wife. When I think of my day, I know I can use help to overcome the stress of raising a kid, a preteen, and a teen while working odd hours on many and varied projects. My teen read it and enjoyed it, too.

Joy Berry Help Me To Be GoodOnce home I perused a couple of Joy Berry’s books in her “Help Me To Be Good” series. This series designed for kids aged 4 through 7 is right up my son’s alley. He’s a good kid…very helpful…super enthusiastic…a sharer of all sorts of knowledge about Star Wars and airplanes, but there are times when he tries my patience when he [fill in a behavior that I would rather he not to do]. He — like all kids — is a work in progress.

The books I reviewed were an excellent resource for parents and teachers who have/work with young children. We enjoyed the following books:

Each book includes a well-thought out story featuring a cartoon boy or girl. The children featured are of various ethnicities. For each double page spread: on one side a cartoon depiction of the behavior with speech bubbles while on the other side there is a paragraph describing the behavior. An attached CD includes a read-along version of the book narated by Joy Berry.

Joy Berry’s other series of books include:

  • Teach Me About — for ages 1-3
  • Let’s Talk About — for ages 3-6
  • Help Me Be Good — for ages 4-7
  • A Fun Easy Way — for ages 6-10
  • Winning Skills — for ages 11 and up
  • Good Answers to Tough Questions — ages 6-12

I am delighted to be able to share Joy Berry’s books with Musings from Me readers!
