Holiday Gift Guide: Bake Up Sweet Treats with Baking Products from @Safeway [#Giveaway ends 12/24]

My kids LOVE to bake. They bake for birthdays, holidays, and just because. The older one bakes for friends at school. I don’t know how she carries a tray of cupcakes and her backpack and lunchbox, but she manages somehow. She likes sharing what she bakes with her friends.

Two weekends ago, my son wanted to bake. He was in a very good mood. So was my husband and practically everyone in Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. Why? The Redskins won a game! That is a true cause for celebration. You see we live in Maryland, but we are surrounded by Ravens fans, Steelers fans, and New York Giants fans. Beating a good team like the Ravens was a true victory for the Redskins. My husband is a true blue Redskins fan, but even he has been disgusted by their performance the past few years. Not so at the Redskins v. Ravens game. HTTR!

My son gathered his ingredients. I helped a bit. He got to work. He was excited to bake a cake. He’s able to measure the ingredients, crack the eggs, which is great. He needs help putting the cake in the oven. But he is very much a hands-on baker.

I love to see the joy my children get from baking. I have fond memories of baking “mince pies” and “Christmas cakes” when I was a child in England. My mother, my sister, and I would gather in the kitchen on a Saturday before Christmas and bake and bake. Flour would be everywhere…on our aprons…in our hair…on the floor. At the end of the day we had boxes and tins of minced pies. A mince pie is a small, cupcake sized, pastry filled with “minced meat” which is dried raisins, sultanas in a very rich syrup, topped off with a pie crust. We only added a teaspoon of minced meat to the pies since the pies were so filling. What you get after baking is a very dense, but filling mini fruit pie. Tasty with a cup of hot tea with milk.
