Bully: Go See This Movie

You probably have seen fewer of my Baltimore posts in this space. There was a time when I used this blog to post about life in the D.C. and Baltimore suburbs. I wrote posts on events happening in the area. About 2 years ago, I became the leader of a local mom  site, then founded another local mom site. I used both sites to promote events of interest to families. Both sites have since closed, but I continue to write about local activities here and on my Baltimore Examiner site.

As the mom of three children, two who are teens, I am confronted with highly sensitive issues all the time. School, home, friends, you name it and one of my kids has had an issue with a friend. Most minor, but I am always on my guard.

Growing up in today’s highly blogged, tweeted, tumblr’d, and Facebooked is not for the feint of heart. My kids have to navigate an online world that knocks me off balance from time to time. I’m an adult with a little more experience of the world, but even I am shocked by what I see on the internet.

Here’s a movie that you must see whether you are a teen, a parent, or a grandparents. I haven’t seen it yet, but want to.

“Bully,” the movie

Bully, a documentary on the bullying crisis in U.S. schools will be shown on
two consecutive Saturdays at the AMC Theatre located in Columbia Mall at
11:00 a.m., September 29, 2012, and October 6, 2012.

The showing is being arranged through the joint and cooperative efforts of County Executive Ken Ulman, the Trustees and Fellows of the Bar Foundation of Howard County, and the Howard County Public School System.

Parents and other concerned adults are encouraged to view this timely and thought-provoking film as an opportunity to begin conversations with students. One of the revelations in the film is that children often do not tell
their parents that they are experiencing bullying so conversation
starters will be provided at the event. Because of the nature of the
film, this event is only for adults.

The cost of attendance is $4.00 per ticket prior to date of attendance and $5.00 at the door.  Tickets can be purchased at: https://stopbullyinginhoward.eventbrite.com.

For some reason this film is not recommended for kids. Personally, I wouldn’t take a child 12 and under, but I would take tweens and teens as this age of kid may be experiencing or witnessing bullying. According to the eventbrite link, no tickets will be sold to those under 18 who purchase through eventbrite. I am not sure if AMC Columbia will prevent parents from attending with their tweens and teens or not.

Tickets are $4 via eventbrite; $5 at the door.

Of interest is that Common Sense Media recommends that Bully is appropriate for 13 and up. Common Sense Media rates Bully a 4/5 for positive messages, a 4/5 for language, a 2/5 for positive role models, a 4/5 for violence. There is no sex or drinking, drugs, or smoking in this movie.
